Varvara Alexandrovna Bibikova (1894–1923) was the daughter of the court councillor (from 1915) Alexander Alexandrovich Bibikov (1874–?) and Varvara Vasilyevna, née Mashkova. The credit for identifying the subject by tracing
the painting’s history goes to Yuri Gudymenko, the keeper of Russian painting in the Hermitage. A “portrait of a young girl in a white dress with a light blue sash and a doll” is mentioned in the “List and correspondence
about the entry of artworks that belonged to Bibikov”. The last private owner of the portrait was Alexander Alexandrovich Bibikov, who lived at 10, Millionnaya Street in St Petersburg. He was married twice: the first
time to Varvara Vasilyevna Mashkova; the second to Liudmila Kuzminichna Sipiagina (Alexandrova by her first marriage). According to the “Bibikov Family Tree”, Alexander Alexandrovich had only one child by his first
wife – Varvara. Evidently, she is the young lady depicted in Makovsky’s painting.
