Representa al doctor Luis Simarro Lacabra (1851-1921), relevante científico y miembro de la Institución Libre de Enseñanza, trabajando en su laboratorio con algunos discípulos y colaboradores.
   La escena recoge un momento vivido por Sorolla en el transcurso de una de sus visitas a la casa de Simarro, gran aficionado al arte y con el que tuvo una estrecha relación a lo largo de su vida.
   El momento de observación y expectación de los discípulos y camaradas del doctor impresionó al pintor, sugiriéndole la idea del cuadro, que empezó a pintar enseguida desplazándose cada noche al laboratorio.
   La forma de abordar el tema recuerda en muchos aspectos a la pintura de Rembrandt, el gran pintor holandés que tanto admiraba Sorolla. Esto se observa sobre todo en la manera de iluminar la escena con un solo foco de luz interior al cuadro, que modela con fuerza las figuras y a la vez crea una atmósfera riquísima de contraluces y penumbras cálidas en la que Sorolla se recrea, con su pasión habitual por la luz en todas sus variedades.

   This painting shows Dr Luis Simarro Lacabra, the renowned psychiatrist and member of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, at work in his laboratory with some of his assistants and fellow scientists. The scene was captured by Sorolla on one of his visits to the house of Doctor Simarro, a great art lover and close lifelong friend of Sorolla. Impressed by the intent observation of the doctor’s expectant disciples and colleagues, the idea for the painting occurred to Sorolla and he began to paint it straight away, going back each evening to the laboratory. The approach to the subject here is reminiscent of the paintings of Rembrandt, the great Dutch master greatly admired by Sorolla . The scene is lit by a single light source within the painting which throws the figures into relief and at the same time creates a rich chiaroscuro of warm shadows where Sorolla can delight in his passion for light in all its variations.
