In her youth Clara Klinghoffer often depicted members of her own family, particularly her six sisters (Fanny, Rose, Rachel, Bertha, Leah, and Hilda), who all modelled for her in natural poses in their East End home, but most frequently Rose (who also sat to the sculptor Jacob Epstein), and Rachel. The delicate brushstrokes which make up this shimmering portrait of Rachel are typical of Klinghoffer's style and demonstrate her noted sensitivity and skill as a portraitist. A similar technique and can be found in 'The Girl in a Green Sari' (1926).
