Presenting the arts of music and architecture in the guise of cherubic children, these two paintings (please see 1950.11) and the matching pair opposite (1950.9-10) once adorned the Château de Bellevue. An elevation of that château appears in the Allegory of Architecture. Before their installation at Bellevue, all four were exhibited at the Salon of 1753, where they enjoyed extraordinary success, inspiring a suite of engravings and countless copies in a wide variety of media. Visit the Bowles Porcelain Gallery on the lower level to see a Sèvres cup and saucer featuring decorations after the Allegory of Music.
