Internationally renowned for his skill, Anthony van Dyck, principal painter to King Charles I of England, produced this stately portrait of Marie-Claire de Croÿ during a brief return to the Southern Netherlands. De Croÿ’s claims to ancestral noble titles had prompted the Spanish king to declare her Duchess of Havré in 1627. Van Dyck accordingly painted her in a voluminous dress and lace collar after the latest fashions at the Brussels court. The boy in luxurious garments beside her is probably her son, Philippe-Eugène. Van Dyck’s magnificent double portrait in rich colors exemplifies the majesty he imparted to his sitters.
