The Rt Hon. John Lord Rous (1750–1827) is seen here wearing the uniform of the first troop of Loyal Suffolk Yeomanry Cavalry, whom he commanded from 1771. In 1780 he was elected to the House of Commons for Suffolk, a seat he held until 1796. Rous was created Earl of Stradbroke in 1821 and was further honoured in that year when he was made Viscount Dunwich in the County of Suffolk. Lord John Rous was succeeded by his eldest son, the tenant of Suffolk. His son, the third Earl, was Governor of the Australian state of Victoria from 1920 to 1926.

   The Rt Hon. John Rous, 6th Baronet, later first Earl of Stradbroke in Suffolk Yeomanry Cavalry Uniform came into the collection in 2010 with a Carlo Maratta style frame. The frame is believed to be the original presentation of the painting and is representative of the popularity of this style of frame in England in the second half of the eighteenth century.
   The Carlo Maratta frame is based on a Roman frame that found its way back to England through the Grand Tour visitors of the eighteenth century.
This frame is carved soft wood, and has been partly re-gilded at some point in the past. The corners are mitred and cross-splined on the reverse.    The leading edge of the frame on John Rous required extensive restoration to areas of loss.
   The frame is one of a pair – the other on the companion Portrait of Lady Rous.
   Both portraits were cleaned and restored in 2009 - 2010.
